2. Recommended varieties:

Clone Characteristic
Gu Kong Large (300 - 600 gm) round to oval shaped fruits. Sweet, slight acidic, crispy.
Guava seedless (third generation) Medium sized of longish shape fruit. Crispy and sourish-sweet taste.

3. Soil Requirement:

  • Fertile, loamy well-drained soil. However, guava can grow on a wide range of soils with flat to very gentle slope.

4. Spacing: 3m x 3m (1100 trees/ha)

In addition, an application of organic manure at 10 to 20 kg/tree/year is recommended.
   
 
Pruning : Prune back the budded plant to a height of 0.5 m from the budding point to encourage 3 - 4 main branches to grow. Prune back these main branches to two nodes to allow side branches to grow. Keep plants low, to a height of 1.6 m for easy wrapping of fruits.

7. Economic Life: 15 - 20 years with maximum yield at 5 - 8 years.

Pests :

1. Fruit Fly

  Larva feeds in the fruit causing it to rot.  

1. Bagging of immature fruits.

2. Collect and destroy affected fruits.

3. Trapping with methyl eugenol to reduce the male population.

4. No registered chemical for control.

 

2. White fly

 

 

Both adult and nymph suck sap from the leaves. Honey dew secreted during feeding results in sooty molds.

 

 

1. Remove affected shoots and leaves.

2. Spraying with detergent may repel them.

3. No registered chemicals for control.
